Once again, it is time for your History Lesson 101! Of course, it’s me, a lowly Bull Writer. No, not Saalfeld, Magnuson, Irwin, Quinn, nor Selden. Just the one and only lover of Lakewood Rotary history. Of course, I will use my trusty “50 years of Service & Fellowship” The author of this epistle is none other than Greg Rediske, who cherishes our Rotary history, as well.

Greg is the author of two Lakewood Rotary missives: a 1956-2006 version (referred to above) and the more recent addition: 70 Years of Service and Fun. The topic today is The Paul Harris Foundation, which was started in 1917 by a man named Arch Klumph, the sixth president of Rotary International. By 1928, the endowment had grown to only $5,739.00. When Paul Harris died in1947, more than $1 million was donated to the newly-named Paul Harris Foundation.

Just as the national fundraising got off to a slow start, so it was with Lakewood Rotary’s contributions. It was not until 1971 that the club produced its first Paul Harris Fellow. He was none other than Russ Klauser, a dear man to Greg Rediske and he was like a father to me.
